ShoreRivers prioritizes given schools the tools and support to institute sustainable practices and meaningful environmental action. We give support at every level, from running professional developments to providing curriculum and lesson plans to funding and assisting in action projects.
In 2018, ShoreRivers applied for a Chesapeake Bay Trust grant to implement our Students for Streams program in Kent County in 2019 and 2020, as well as put on a teacher Professional Development series across Kent, Queen Anne's, Talbot, and Dorchester counties. Kent County does not have a strong foundational biology curriculum, so to better support our teacher partners and our Students for Streams program, ShoreRivers developed a series of nine high school biology lessons. Lessons were created in December 2019, and will be implemented in March-April 2020. These lessons complement the ShoreRivers class visit and field trips scheduled for April 6, 2020 and April 14-17, 2020, respectively. All lessons were developed in alignment with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), the Meaningful Watershed Education Experience (MWEE) framework, and the 5 Es lesson plan framework.
Supply Boxes for Dorchester County Third Grade Science Teachers
As a part of Sturgeon Discovery program, ShoreRivers has run a series of Professional development programs for our teachers. On March 7, we held a PD training on transforming "Student Data to Student Action." In support of the training given on this day, ShoreRivers Educator Megan Buonpane put together large supply boxes to enable teachers to do multiple activities with their students. Supply boxes were given to 9 Dorchester County teachers who attended the session, and supplies included: rain gauges, magnified "critter cages," measuring equipment, clipboards, species identifications books and guides, timers, trash bags, and sterile gloves for litter pickups.
