North Dorchester High School Recycling Bins
At North Dorchester High School, some students in Shannon Bones's Biology classes proposed and chose to conduct action projects to improve recycling at their school. ShoreRivers provided new tall recycling cans and small square recycling bins, and in addition students collected and distributed old paper boxes to use as recycling bins as well. ShoreRivers Community Engagement Manager Rebecca Murphy and Chesapeake Conservation Corps Member Mairin Corasaniti attended classes on October 28, 2019 to help students develop messaging and work on their recycling project. This project served as a follow up to a recycling awareness project conducted by North Dorchester High students conducted on April 18, 2019. About 75 students participated across the two semesters in recycling projects.
Cambridge South Dorchester Litter Pick-up and Sorting
Students at Cambridge South Dorchester High School, as a part of their spring '18 Biology course with Mr. Roache, decided that their action project with ShoreRivers should be a trash clean-up and social media outreach campaign. Students collected litter around their campus on April 5, 2018, separating out the types of litter (including recyclables) using the Project Clean Stream sheet below. Students then created powerpoint slides to be shown on school TVs to encourage other students to stop littering and start recycling. 112 students and two teachers participated.
