ShoreRivers currently partners with two schools, Stevensville Middle School and Centreville Middle School, to help them with their Green School recertifications.
Stevensville Middle School
Stevensville Middle School (STMS) math teacher and Green Team Leader Becky Berberich reached out to ShoreRivers in November of 2019 for assistance with her Green School application. ShoreRivers CCC Member Mairin Corasaniti corresponded with Berberich and arranged to meet with Berberich and ShoreRivers volunteer and Green School expert Linda Scoggins on January 3, 2020. At this meeting, Berberich, Scoggins, and Corasaniti went through the current STMS application objective by objective, and they used a templated developed by Scoggins to identify places where they needed to fill in gaps. They then referenced past applications and a schoolyard walk to identify what could still be included in the application. After this meeting, Berberich, Scoggins, and Corasaniti determined that STMS actually had enough material to fill in the application successfully. Corasaniti provided follow-up assistance to Berberich regarding the format of the STMS application. ShoreRivers additionally provided some online resources for Berberich. Berberich is featured as a ShoreRivers Green School partner in an upcoming ShoreRivers Advocate article about the Green School process.
Centreville Middle School
ShoreRivers has been partnering with Centreville Middle School for the past 3 months specifically on their Green School application. ShoreRivers CCC Member Mairin Corasaniti met with CMS Green Team leader Sean McCabe and the CMS Green Team on January 23, 2020 to discuss their Green School projects and how ShoreRivers can best help out. Corasaniti joined the team on a schoolyard and trail walk around, and they discussed improvements the team can aim to make on the trails and outdoor classrooms. ShoreRivers is currently working with University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science graduate student Anna Windle to provide drone footage of the trails for the rehabilitation projects. Corasaniti will also lead the Green Team in an indoor drone lesson to help them better understand drones as an environmental resource in early April. ShoreRivers has also connected the CMS Green Team with funding resources and is assisting McCabe on two grant applications.
