Third Grade MWEE: Sturgeon Discovery
Our Sturgeon Discovery program started in 2018 and has been offered to every third grade science class in Talbot and Dorchester counties. The 2018-2019 pilot year was funded by the Chesapeake Bay Trust and ran in Talbot County at Saint Michaels, Easton, White Marsh, Tilghman, and Chapel District Elementary Schools. For continuation in 2019-2022, ShoreRivers received a NOAA B-WET grant and expanded the program to include Dorchester County public schools. [Dorchester County schools served this past year: Maple Elementary School, Choptank Elementary School, Hurlock Elementary School, South Dorchester School, Vienna Elementary School. The program is built on the NOAA SCUTES education materials and includes three in-class lessons, a field trip to Horn Point Lab to explore the watershed and see live sturgeon, and a funded action project.
High School Biology MWEE: Students for Streams
Midshore Riverkeeper Conservancy, one of ShoreRivers's legacy organizations, started the high school Students for Streams program in 2013, and when ShoreRivers was formed in 2018, the education staff continued the program. The Students for Streams program currently serves high school biology classes in Queen Anne's, Talbot, Kent, and Dorchester Counties. For the 2019-2020 school year, the program was funded to include one in-class lesson centered on oysters and water quality, a field trip to Horn Point Laboratory to explore the oyster hatchery there and experience the Choptank watershed, and an action project proposed and conducted by the students in each class. Schools served in this project include: North Dorchester High School, Cambridge South Dorchester High School, Easton High School, Saint Michael's Middle High School, Kent Island High School, Queen Anne's County High School, and Kent County High School.
Upper Shore Youth Environmental Action Summit
ShoreRivers is partnering with the Washington College Center for Environment and Society to hold the first-ever Upper Shore Youth Environmental Action Summit. The Summit was to be held at Washington College on March 26, 2020. Please follow the link in the previous sentence to explore our Summit website, which includes more information about the Summit, tips for students, mentors, and parents, and information about the nine professional presenters, who represent organizations such as Maryland DNR, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, and Kent Island Beach Clean Ups.
Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent state of emergency at the state and national level, ShoreRivers and Washington College CES have made the decision to cancel our Youth Summit, but we are working on using the resources, partnerships, and programming developed for the Summit for a Summit this summer or early in the fall of 2020, once the danger posed by the pandemic has passed.
